Easy to read language, but some mature themes
Wel, dyma ni, y drydydd llyfr - a'r olaf - mewn trioleg hynod o boblogaidd, Y Melanai. Mae ‘na grynodeb byr ar ddechrau’r llyfr sy’n adrodd yr hanes hyd yma ond y gwir yw, llawer gwell fyddai ddarllen y llyfrau o’r cychwyn ac yn y drefn gywir. Mae’n gwneud llawer mwy o synnwyr, ac maen nhw mor dda.
Mae’r prolog yn awgrymu nad yw pethau’n rhy dda ym Melania. Does neb wedi gweld y Frenhines ers tro ac mae’r blodau wedi gwywo ac mae’r gwenyn yn swrth. Ar ddiwedd Y Diffeithwch Du, mi gyrhaeddodd y Dywysoges Efa a’i chriw wlad arall, sef, fel mae’r teitl yn awgrymu, Edenia. Dyma wlad lle mae popeth yn iawn ac mae pawb yn hapus. Does ‘na ddim rheolau rhyfedd ynglŷn â lladd eich mam – diolch byth! A dweud y gwir, nid Brenhines sy’n llywodraethu yma, ond pwyllgor rheoli ddemocrataidd. Dim yn ddrwg o beth i gyflwyno ‘chydig o politics.
Mae’r nofel yma’n parhau ar yr un cyflymder a’r ail nofel, ac er eu bod nhw wedi cyrraedd diogelwch (gymharol) Edenia, mae yna ddigon o beryglon i'r criw wynebu. Mae yna lyswennod anferth gyda dannedd miniog, a phryfaid cop anferthol i frwydro yn eu herbyn. Diolch byth fod ganddyn nhw ffrindiau newydd yn Edenia.
Yn un peth, mae croeso mawr i'r bobl ifanc yn Edenia, ond does dim croeso i Id, y cawr. Mae gan bobl Edenia ofn y cewri ac maen nhw’n eu casáu. Tybed ydi Id, eu ffrind newydd, wedi bod yn dweud y gwir? Er bod y criw wedi dod drwy’r diffeithwch du gyda’i gilydd, mae yna her newydd wrth iddyn nhw gael eu gwahanu yn y nofel yma. A fydd perthynas pob un yn goroesi, neu bydd bod ar wahân yn golygu fod hi ar ben i rai?
Mae’r criw ifanc yn setlo’n dda yn eu cartref newydd ac er bod pawb yn fodlon eu byd yn Edenia, mae ‘na rai o’r trigolion angen help. Tydi Prad, Efa a Dalian ddim yn meddwl dwywaith cyn gwirfoddoli i fynd ar rescue mission heriol a pheryglus – does dim sicrwydd y bydden nhw’n dod nôl yn fyw! Ar y daith yma, mae Efa’n gwneud darganfyddiad fydd yn newid ei bywyd am byth...
Rŵan fod y drioleg allan yn ei chyfanrwydd, mae’n bosib cael darlun llawn. Mae’r trydydd llyfr yn cloi nifer o linynnau sydd wedi cael eu cyflwyno eisoes. Dwi’n meddwl fod Bethan Gwanas yn gwneud job dda o ddod a phopeth at ei gilydd yn daclus yn y llyfr olaf.
Mae’r ddau lyfr cyntaf wedi bod yn arwain at y foment lle bydd Efa’n dychwelyd i Felania i achub y dydd, neu i wynebu ei ffawd. Mae popeth yn adeiladu ar gyfer y final showdown, neu’r epic battle ddisgwyliedig ar y diwedd llyfr 3, fel sy’n draddodiadol yn y genre yma. Yn anffodus, mae’r diweddglo wedi ei frysio braidd ac yn cael ei grynhoi i gyd mewn epilog. Roedd y drioleg wych yma’n haeddu diweddglo gwell - sawl pennod arall, a dweud y gwir.
Ond fydd ‘na happy ever after i Efa a’i ffrindiau tybed?
Wel, un peth sy’n sicr. Mae’r drioleg yma wedi apelio at fwy na dim ond plant yn eu harddegau, ac mae nifer o oedolion wedi ei mwynhau. Mae’r awdur wedi dangos fod ganddi ddawn ysgrifennu ym maes ffantasi ac nid yn unig ei bod hi’n deall y genre, ond yn amlwg yn ei fwynhau ei hun.
Dwi’n meddwl fod yna fwy o straeon i'w hadrodd am Felania, Edenia, Pica a’r byd newydd ryfeddol mae Bethan Gwanas wedi llwyddo i’w greu. Dwi’n gobeithio wir y bydd hi’n ail ymweld â’r Melanai yn y dyfodol i ni gael darllen mwy am anturiaethau’r genhedlaeth nesaf.
Well, here we go, the third – and last – in the popular trilogy, Y Melanai.
There’s a quick re-cap at the start of the book that brings us up to date so far. I’d certainly recommend reading the two other novels First though, in correct order. It makes more sense, and they’re just so good.
The prologue suggests that things aren’t too great in Melania. Nobody’s seen the Queen for some time and the flowers have wilted and the bees are lethargic. At the end of Y Diffeithwch Du, Princess Efa and her crew arrived in a new Country which is, the aptly named, Edenia. This is a land where everything’s fine and everyone’s happy. There are no rules about killing your mother, that’s for sure. No queen reigns here, but instead, a democratic council. Not bad - bringing in some politics.
The novel maintains the pace of the previous, and despite them arriving in the relative safety of Edenia, there are still dangers facing the young friends. These include giant eels with sharp teeth and huge man-eating spiders. Thank goodness they have some new friends to help.
They are welcomed into Edenia but there’s no welcome to their giant friend, Id. The inhabitants of Edenia hate giants. Is there something Id hasn’t been telling us? Despite their strong bonds from their previous adventures, these are put to the test now as they become separated. Will their relationships survive?
The young crew settle well in their new home and even though everyone is quite content, some of Edenia’s people need help. Prad, Efa and Dalian waste no time in volunteering for a daring rescue mission – with no certainty that they will return alive! On this mission, Efa makes a startling discovery which will have big implications...
Now that the full trilogy is out, it’s possible to reflect and get the full Picture. The last book ties up all the strings neatly. The first books have all been about building up to the big moment when Efa returns to her home country to either save the day or face the consequences of her actions. Everything has been building up to the final showdown, or the expected epic battle that is common in this genre. Unfortunately, the ending is very rushed and is all done in the epilogue. This excellent trilogy deserved a more fleshed out ending – a few more chapters, in my opinion.
So, will there be a happy ever after for Efa and co?
Well, one thing’s for sure. This trilogy has appealed to more than just a teenage audience. There are a number of adults who have also enjoyed it. The author shows she has a firm grasp of the fantasy genre, and not only does she understand it, but she enjoys it.
I think there are more tales to be told from Melania, Edenia, Pica and the new world she has successfully crafted. I hope in future that we can return here to read about the next generation’s adventures.
